Introduction

Over the past year, our researchstaff have been highly active- their work has been recognized in academicand clinical circles across Canada as well as internationally. In 1995 wereceived over one million dollars in funding for research ranging from preventingabuse and neglect in long-term care, to investigating new drugs for thetreatment of dementia, and to health promotion among older women. We haveshared the information we have learned by publishing and presenting ourresults to colleagues worldwide well over 50 times.

Much of our research efforts have focused on the quality of life of ourresidents examining such topics as dietary needs, management of incontinence,falls, promoting healthy sleep, and pain assessment. In the area of functionalassessment and rehabilitation, our staff have developed new clinical scalesfor assessing functional mobility which are currently being used by otherhealth centres. We are also collaborating with U.S. researchers to identifypredictors of successful rehabilitation following stroke.

Members of the Institute of Palliative Care are actively involved inresearch that investigates how palliative care can be delivered effectivelyto the home and institutional setting. The Clinical Epidemiology Unit hasgrown over the past year, with researchers studying a wide range of issuessuch as health care decision-making, cancer screening, and evidence-basedpractice. Similarly, research in the Clinical Trials Group, the PhotodermUnit, and the Nursing Research Group have all focused on improving the healthcare of our community.

hoteles en ZurichWe have also looked at the quality of life of staff of the SCOHS, studyingthe prevention of back injury and dealing with the psychological effectsof patients' deaths.

Top-Luxus-Hotels BordeauxIn addition to these activities, we have been involved in the educationof staff and students. Workshops in questionnaire development, basic statistics,and research design methods were held for staff across all clinical andadministrative services. Medical residents in Family Medicine, Geriatrics,and Rehabilitation Medicine received assistance and instruction in conductingresearch. Students, ranging from undergraduate to PhD, were supervised byour research staff. Results will be presented at local, national, and internationalconferences.

The role of Research is to help us to understand whether or not we areachieving our goals of providing good care, while maintaining a high standardof quality of life for our clients. It is mainly through research that wedevelop new and better treatment methods, improve service delivery or alternatives,and enhance evidence-based decision-making either for the clinician or themanager. Our common goal, above all, is to achieve and maintain excellencein patient care with dedication and sensitivity.
