FACTS ABOUT PALLIATIVE CARE IN OTTAWA-CARLETON

  • Ottawa-Carleton's palliative care network is the most highly developed in Canada
  • the Council of the OCRPCA brings together representatives from 30 agencies who deliver care to the terminally ill in Ottawa
  • while people with cancer are the largest consumers of palliative care services, palliative care seeks to serve the needs of people with other life-threatening illnesses such as AIDS
  • the demand for palliative care services is expected to rise dramatically as the population ages and incidence of cancer increases
  • palliative care services are available in all hospitals across this region
  • approximately 200 people on any given day receive palliative care services in their home
  • an annual forum is sponsored by the OCRPCA to allow consumers of palliative care to raise issues about service delivery.


FACTS ABOUT THE OTTAWA REGIONAL PALLIATIVE CARE CENTRE

Acute Palliative Care

Based at the SCO Hospital's Élisabeth Bruyère Pavilion,the Ottawa Regional Palliative Care Unit is the only inpatient palliativecare unit in the region. Patients have high intensity symptoms and needs.

In 1994-1995:

  • 25 beds
  • 551 referrals for admission (281 from home)
  • 282 patients admitted
  • average length of stay was 21 days.

Chronic Palliative Care

Both pavilions (Élisabeth Bruyère and Saint-Vincent) ofthe SCO Hospital operate a Chronic Palliative Care Program. Patients havelower intensity symptoms and needs.

In 1994-1995:

  • ÉBP: 8 beds (scattered)
  • SVP: 6 beds
  • ÉBP: 96 referrals for admission (65 from acute care)
  • SVP: 68 referrals for admission (63 from acute care)
  • ÉBP: 16 patients admitted
  • SVP: 18 patients admitted
  • internal consultations at both sites
  • average length of stay was 110 to 115 days.


FACTS ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA INSTITUTE OF PALLIATIVECARE

  • the Institute's mission is "to decrease suffering and enhance the quality of life for terminally-ill people through palliative care research and education"
  • academic and research programs of the Institute flow out of patient care
  • results of palliative care research flow back into patient management
  • based at the SCO Hospital's Élisabeth Bruyère Pavilion
  • the Institute operates several programs including:
    • a palliative care information/consultation service that provides information to consumers about local palliative care resources through a help line and a consultation/education service for health care providers
    • a continuing education course for physicians to enhance their skills and knowledge in the delivery of palliative care services
    • a Fellowship in Palliative Medicine--a one-year program to train physicians to be consultants in this field.

The Institute is a unique partnership with the:

  • SCOHS
  • Faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa
  • Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre
  • Ottawa-Carleton Regional Palliative Care Association.
